Beira rail service for landlocked states

The Balaka-Lilongwe railway now enables coal imports from Mozambique’s Tete Province, where Indian companies have bought mines to supply coal to India.

Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana will enhance the Beira-Zimbabwe-Botswana railway and develop a US$1.5 billion deepwater port at Techobanine.

The Port of Nacala in Mozambique handled 13.6 Mt of coal last year, exceeding expectations after Vale’s 2023 exit but below the initial railway target.

A 525 km railway to connect the port to coal mines in Tete Province is also planned, plus a shorter spur link to mines in Chitima.

Vale transported 10 Mt of coal from its open cast Moatize mine to the ports of Beira and Nacala in the first 10 months of this year.
