LNG isn’t everything, there’s still a role for coal
NewsLiquified natural gas is unlikely to displace coal in China’s energy transition, as the country prioritises domestic energy sources over imported LNG.
Enel’s 2.64 GW power plant near Brindisi on the Adriatic coast has benefited from upgrades of its coal mills and flue gas clean-up system to reduce emissions.
Enel has constructed a €120M fully automated coal storage facility to reduce dust emissions, using laminated wood for the two domed structures. The largest of their type in Europe, the domes are 145m in diameter and 50m high, and are covered by a 22,000 m2 lattice of cross-laminated timber.
The port of Brindisi handles imported coal for Federico’s four 660 MW units, with 6.5 Mtpa of international coal shipped and unloaded from bulk cargo ships. The coal is transported via a 13 km conveyor belt to the coal storage domes. The geodesic facilities have a total storage capacity of around 360,000t, and allow for coal to be conveyed to the power plant boilers without exposure to the outside atmosphere.
