Indebted UK Coal completes restructuring

Miners at Kellingley Colliery, Britain’s last deep coal mine, have finished their final shift, as the mine closes.

UK Coal is to shutdown two out of the last three of Britain’s deep coal mines through a staged closure, supported by a £10M loan from the Government.

A fire that has raged underground for three weeks has forced the closure of Britain’s largest remaining coal mine, Daw Mill Colliery.

Despite continuing problems with Railtrack, in administration, rail freight could increase its share of total freight in the UK from eight to 10 per cent this year in tonne/km terms.
