Transport Canada publishes new Grain Form for Type II vessels

Transport Canada has launched a new, streamlined Grain Form for Type II vessels loading bulk grain at Canadian ports for export.

This form simplifies grain stability calculations for vessels already complying with the International Code for the Safe Carriage of Grain in Bulk (International Grain Code), which is part of Canadian regulations under the Cargo, Fumigation and Tackle Regulations (CFTR). The goal is to enhance the documentation process while ensuring safety standards for grain transport.

The simplified form is for Type II vessels, while the more detailed version is available for those lacking a grain stability booklet or facing specific stability issues.

This new grain stability form is part of Transport Canada’s efforts to modernise the marine sector. By simplifying grain stability calculations for vessels with approved stability booklets, it aims to ease the burden on ship Masters and crew during inspections, while also helping inspectors verify compliance with safety regulations.

The form aligns with the grain form used by the National Cargo Bureau of the United States, facilitating harmonisation of procedures for vessels operating between Canada and the US.
